Bishop’s Stortford 3-0 Brightlingsea Regent Match Report 10/4/23

Hamish Arnold

Bishop’s Stortford’s push towards the title continued on Easter Monday with a 3-0 win at home to relegated Brightlingsea Regent in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division. Hornchurch dropped points with a draw at Carshalton Athletic, while Canvey Island’s match against Aveley was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Harry Beadle, Ryan Charles and Jonny Giles scored as the Blues won a fifth consecutive match without conceding a goal.

Beadle scored in the third minute, Giles’ free kick from a deep position was punched away by goalkeeper Charlie Turner, but only to Ollie Peters on the edge of the box, he passed to Sam Deering in the right side of the cross, whose left footed cross was headed home by the Colchester United loanee, for two goals in his last three matches. Mark Haines could have doubled the lead soon after with a far post run, but Giles’ corner was overhit. Samuel Jeremiah dribbled from midfield and into the box, he laid it back to Bradley Russell, but his first time strike went over the crossbar. Deering took a low free kick from the corner of the box on the left, Charles and Frankie Merrifield missed the ball, and Beadle’s side-footed effort at the far post was saved by Turner for a corner. Haines won the header from the resulting corner but couldn’t hit the target. Giles unleashed a fierce strike from long range which forced Turner into a full stretch save, but a defender got his head in the way for a Blues corner. Anthony Church slid a pass into the right channel for Merrifield, he dribbled into the box and chipped the ball to the far post where Charles side-footed home on the volley to make it two – his second goal in as many games. On the stroke of half-time Charles crossed from the left to Giles who volleyed from 15 yards but couldn’t keep the shot down.

HT 2-0

Stortford were playing into a strong wind in the second half, and struggled to create many more openings, and at times were under pressure from the visitors – who beat the Blues in the reverse fixture in January. Russell should have done better from a pair of free kicks in promising positions, but hit the wall both times with powerful efforts. Jermaine Anderson hit a long range strike but it lacked direction and missed the target, before Giles’ curling free kick deceived the defence and goalkeeper, from a wide position it evaded the group of players and bounced into the net. Deering worked the ball in from the left wing, and from 20 yards his shot was high and wide of the goal.
