Bishop’s Stortford 1-4 Southend United Match Report

Bishop’s Stortford 1-4 Southend United Match Report 22/7/23

Hamish Arnold

Southend United inflicted the first pre-season friendly defeat of the campaign for Bishop’s Stortford, running out 1-4 winners at the RDA Stadium. Darren Foxley opened the scoring for the Blues, before four unanswered goals from the National League visitors.

Ollie Peters’ low cross from the right was deflected into the path of Foxley at the far post who stabbed home from close range in the second minute, but almost straight from the kick off, Wes Fonguck clipped the ball across from the left from an overlapping run for Callum Powell who finished side a side-foot volley. Gus Scott-Morriss’ powerful shot was saved by Jack Giddens, and Powell volleyed over the bar from the edge of the box on the rebound. Powell dribbled down the left wing and squared to Jack Wood on the edge of the box, who curled the ball into the top right corner to put Southend ahead. Powell turned smartly in the box and got his shot away quickly, but Giddens was equal to it with a low save, and Fonguck fired over the target from range when the ball came out to him in space after a half-cleared corner. Peters’ corner at the other end nearly curled in at the far post, but curled narrowly wide with Collin Andeng Ndi beaten. Ola Ogunwamide dribbled into the left side of the box and took a shot, but a deflection carried it into the keeper’s arms. Tom Clifford flicked the ball into the path of Nathan Ralph, he cut it back to Wood who turned and placed home into the bottom left corner for his second of the match on the stroke of half time.

HT 1-3

Half time substitute Rob Howard slid a through ball to Ogunwamide, and he cut the ball back to Jack Thomas, but he curled his first time shot over the crossbar. Wood completed his hat-trick from a through ball from Oli Coker, he dribbled past Haines and slotted low across goal into the bottom left corner. Substitute Pulham was straight into the action, his first shot was a volley effort which was well saved by Giddens.
