Bishop’s Stortford 1-4 Gloucester City Match Report

27/1/24

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

The 150th anniversary celebrations for Bishop’s Stortford were cut short as Gloucester City ran out 1-4 winners at the RDA Stadium on Saturday in the Vanarama National League North. The Blues – wearing a special one-off blue and white striped kit for the occasion – finished the match with nine players and remain bottom of the table, while City pick up a valuable three points in their fight to avoid the drop on the day that Stortford had invited former players, managers and staff to celebrate the sesquicentenary of the Club on the nearest home match day to 28 January, the day in 1874 when the Club was formed.

Gloucester opened the scoring inside four minutes, with Elliott Durrell’s right wing free kick laid off in the box by Joe Hanks to Teddy Rowe, who fired home through a crowd into the bottom left corner. Tosin Olufemi blocked another shot by Rowe just minutes later, from Theo Robinson’s backheel flick from a right wing cross. Kane Crichlow played a through ball to Sow, who worked some space for a left footed shot, which was saved by Zach Jeacock, but Ryan Charles was shouting for a pass as he made a run on the left side of the box. Kane Crichlow’s left wing free kick was swung in towards the far post, where a sliding Amadou Kassarate netted the equaliser for the Blues. Harry Pinchard’s 18 yard free kick was curled over the bar, and Darren Foxley went for goal with a free kick from a wide position, and Zach Jeacock was able to get a fingertip on the ball to see it rebound off the crossbar. Robinson received the ball from a low cross and laid it off to Hanks, but his shot was blocked by Harry Beadle. Beadle was unable to cut out the next attack, with Hanks’ cross making its way to Robinson who slotted home. Olufemi put the ball back in the box following a cleared Blues corner, but Beadle was offside as he flicked the ball to Crichlow on the left wing. Hanks headed over the bar from a right wing cross in first half injury time but City went in at the break with the lead.

HT 1-2

Gloucester increased their lead nine minutes into the second half with Danny Wright heading home a right wing cross at the far post, while Osman Sow was unable to meet Kassarate’s header from a Foxley free kick, and Mark Haines’ follow-up cross was saved by Jeacock. Foxley was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the penalty area, and Stortford were down to 10. Emmanuel Oke denied Robinson with a last ditch tackle, before Kassarate headed wide from Crichlow’s free kick. Robinson’s shot was tipped over the bar by Giddens from a tight angle, and Rowe fired off target from 25 yards. Crichlow and Olufemi both missed a low cross from Sow into the six yard box, before substitute Ben Beresford sealed the win with a low finish into the bottom right corner on the end of a counter attack. Sow wanted a Stortford penalty when he was tackled in the box as he tried to convert Aaron Greene’s cross. Ethan Burnett was unable to continue with an injury late on, and with no more substitutes available, the Blues were playing with nine until the referee blew for full time.
