Bishop’s Stortford 1-1 Potters Bar Town Match Report 20/12/22

Bishop’s Stortford were held to a 1-1 draw against Hertfordshire rivals Potters Bar Town on Tuesday night. Both sides were playing their first match in two weeks, with the Blues having three matches postponed due to the recent cold weather. In the battle of second against third in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, the points were shared as Mo Kamara cancelled out Frankie Merrifield’s opener.

The break between matches was evident from the start, with both sides looking rusty in the first half, despite that, there were moments of quality and chances created in a fairly open match before the break. Scholars skipper Kamara slid a pass through to Wraynel Hercules early on, and his first time shot was well saved by Giddens down low to his left. Donell Thomas controlled a pass from Merrifield into the box, and went down appealing for a penalty as the ball ran away, and no penalty was awarded. From the resulting corner, Darren Foxley crossed to Merrifield, but he could only glance wide of the left post. Ryan Charles flicked the ball on from the edge of the box from a deep free kick by Foxley, but it carried through to goalkeeper Dante Baptiste who pushed it around the post for a corner. Low cross from the left wing was cleared off the line by Jay Porter, Charles picked it up and dribbled through the midfield, before passing to Foxley but his cross was too heavy for Donell Thomas in the middle of the box. Quentin Monville made a run into the box from the right wing, but his low shot from a tight angle was wide of the target. Ollie Peters – deputising at right back – passed to Foxley outside him on the wing, and he cut the ball back to Merrifield who needed to stretch to make contact with a side-footed effort, but he fired wide. Monville’s free kick was met by Miles Mitchell-Nelson who rose highest but headed down into Giddens’ arms.

HT 0-0

Matt Johnson’s long throw fell to Foxley but his volley was blocked, and Donell Thomas’ rebound was also kept out by a defender. Johnson then headed over the crossbar from Foxley’s right wing free kick, and Donell Thomas’ sliding finish after Baptiste failed to clear Charles’ cross was blocked and cleared. Donell Thomas’ cross from the right was nodded back across goal by Charles at the far post, the ball was half cleared before Merrifield could reach it and Johnson fired wide from the edge of the box. Monville took the ball on his chest, shielding Porter as he ran into the box, and his low shot was pushed behind by Giddens. A deflected pass by Charles intended for Foxley in the middle fell kindly to Merrifield running down the right wing, he cut into the box and curled into the bottom left corner on his left foot to break the deadlock. The striker was then required to help out the defence, heading clear when a free kick deflected off the wall and onto the top of the crossbar, and just three minutes after going behind, Bar hit back as Kamara converted a tap-in at the far post when Stortford couldn’t clear the danger. A lapse in concentration by Baptsite saw him spill a powerful strike from Giles for a corner even though it was straight at him in the middle of the goal from 25 yards. From the corner, the Scholars broke quickly through Hercules on the left wing, he passed to Kamara in the middle and Jack Thomas did enough to put him off in front of goal and he fired wide. Brandon Adams – still looking for his first Blues goal – looked certain to score when Baptiste pushed Giles’ curling strike into his path, but he shot over the bar. Ryan Henshaw went close with two headers, first from Giles’ free kick on the right, and from a corner his header was superbly tipped over the bar by Baptiste at full stretch. Not to be outdone, Giddens pulled off a stunning save of his own, to deny a curling strike from range by Hercules which looked destined for the top corner in injury time.
