Bishop’s Stortford 1-1 Horsham Match Report 25/2/23

Hamish Arnold

Bishop’s Stortford were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Horsham in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, but stay top of the table on goal difference. Ryan Charles cancelled out Shamir Fenelon’s opening goal, but the Blues failed to complete a comeback and claim all three points. A win for Aveley sees them join the Blues on 63 points, with a six goal swing keeping Stortford top, with two games in hand on the Millers. Hornchurch closed the gap to one point with a win, but have played a game less than the Blues.

Anthony Church struck a volley from long range but Taylor Seymour parried it to Frankie Merrifield but his shot was saved. Darren Foxley’s low cross was flicked by Alex Malins onto the crossbar and nearly an own goal for the Hornets, and Sam Deering’s free kick was won in the air by Ryan Henshaw, but the header was straight at Seymour and saved. The Blues defence were caught out by a superb through ball down the right hand side, Fenelon made the run and took the ball round Jack Giddens and slotted home in the 10th minute. Deering’s free kick from 20 yards looked destined for the top corner but landed on the roof of the net. Charles saw his cross headed behind for a corner, which was subsequently cleared for a throw in. Matt Johnson’s long throw was flicked on by Merrifield, but no teammate could apply the finishing touch and the ball drifted wide. Lee Harding curled a shot wide from the right after Fenelon’s switch from the left, and another long throw was headed off target by Henshaw this time.

HT 0-1

The Blues made the perfect start to the second half, after a free kick was blocked on the left wing, the second cross was won in the air by Church, who headed to Merrifield, his low cross was met by the diving header of Charles, who beat Seymour despite getting a hand to it. Giddens made a great diving save and caught a long range strike that was travelling into the top corner by Tom Kavanagh, and at the other end from the next attack, Stortford should have taken the lead when Ollie Peters’ cross was side-footed by Church at the back post but he couldn’t hit the target. Chris Harris got a shot away through a crowd of bodies from Johnson’s long throw, the deflected effort was pushed wide for a corner, and Merrifiekd turned away from a defender into the box from the next attack, forcing Seymour into another great save. Into injury time and Foxley was put through on goal by a defence splitting path from Merrifield but the shot was deflected for a corner, from which the Blues flooded the six yard box and caused a scramble, but Horsham managed to clear and hold on to take a point home.
