Bishop’s Stortford 0-4 Alfreton Town Match Report

Bishop’s Stortford 0-4 Alfreton Town Match Report 7/11/23

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

Three goals in eight second half minutes condemned 10-man Bishop’s Stortford to defeat at home to Alfreton Town on Tuesday in the Vanarama National League North. The Blues came into this match with their first win in nine matches, while Town progressed to the second round proper of the FA Cup at the weekend.

Dwayne Wiley scored for the Derbyshire visitors inside the first minute, Adam Lund’s long throw from the left was flicked on at the near post and the captain was there to volley home from six yards. Ryan Charles headed wide from a deflected shot by McGregor on the edge of the box, before Zain Walker thought he had equalised with a powerful strike from 20 yards that looked destined for the top right corner, but it cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and Lund cleared before McGregor could tap in the rebound. Dylan Motley-Henry saw his low shot from the right side of the box blocked by Harry Beadle. Stortford finished the half stronger with Darren Foxley seeing his shot deflected over the bar, a succession of corners followed with no clear cut chance before half time.

HT 0-1

Jack Giddens denied Jordan Thewlis’ low shot and on the counter-attack, Walker laid the ball off to McGregor but his shot curled wide. Mbunya Alemanji came off the bench for his debut, but it was an Alfreton substitute who was next on the scoresheet, as Ryan Taylor fired home a rebound from Liam Waldock’s long range strike that was parried by Giddens. Waldock did get his goal just two minutes later, curling a free kick into the top left corner from 25 yards, before Thewlis slotted home a penalty into the bottom right corner after Mark Haines pulled the shirt of Taylor in the box, which was enough for referee Dean Skipper to show a red card. Sam Robbins made his home return after injury, and along with Beadle they prevented the deficit being increased, with Beadle making three brilliant blocks at close range late on.
