Bishop’s Stortford 0-1 Spennymoor Town Match Report

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

Spennymoor Town picked up three points at Bishop’s Stortford  with a goal in the fifth minute of second half injury time as the Blues suffered a sixth consecutive defeat. Stortford were playing at the RDA Stadium for the first time in a month with heavy rain preventing any scheduled matches going ahead, but suffered a ninth home league defeat on the bounce and remain bottom of the Vanarama National League North table.

Rob Ramshaw shot low but straight at Jack Giddens from Sam Robbins’ miscued header, before Corey McKeown saw his shot after a through ball blocked by Tosin Olufemi, and Will Harris curled his shot straight at Giddens from the rebound. Darren Foxley’s free kick was cleared but only as far as Jack Thomas on the edge of the box, but he fired narrowly wide of the left post. Aaron Greene’s deep cross from the left wing went all the way through to Foxley, who played a one-two with Lordon Akolbire, but the near-post shot went off target. Harris volleyed a shot from a tight angle which went wide of the far post, before Brad James saved Zain Walker’s shot from Foxley’s through ball. Finley Shrimpton fired high and wide of the goal from long range, while the visitors had the ball in the net in first half injury time, with Ramshaw bundling the ball into the net, only for Harris to be flagged offside when the original shot came in and reacted first to set up his skipper.

HT 0-0

McKeown’s shot was blocked by Akolbire, and his cut back from the goal line was cleared by Harry Beadle. Olufemi’s free kick hit the wall before Ryan Charles couldn’t reach Greene’s cross at full stretch, and the defender managed to clear. McKeown dribbled into the box and his low shot was blocked for a corner, Foxley won the ball back high up the pitch and fired low left footed, while Walker’s run through the middle went unnoticed. McKeown headed over the bar from a miscued clearance in the box, substitute Kane Crichlow shot straight at James after Charles’ cross had been blocked. Harris thought he had won it late on, only for Giddens to deny his low shot with his legs, and Giddens misread the following corner into the six yard box, with Ramshaw on hand to hit the back of the net from close range and seal three points.
