Bishop’s Stortford 0-1 Farsley Celtic Match Report 19/8/23

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

Farsley Celtic inflicted a second consecutive defeat over Bishop’s Stortford at the RDA Stadium on Saturday. The Blues lost by the same scoreline at Brackley Town on Tuesday, and Darren Stephenson scored the only goal for the Celts against the Isthmian League Premier Division champions with Farsley Celtic inflicting a 0-1 loss over the Blues at the RDA Stadium. Darren Stephenson scored the only goal of the encounter, leaving Stortford with four points from as many games in the Vanarama National League North.

Darren Foxley’s left wing cross flew over the head of Sykes in the middle, and went into space at the back post where Zain Walker was making a late run, but he couldn’t reach the ball with an outstretched leg. Jack Morrell’s cross from a deep position went straight to Sykes, who volleyed first time with his left foot from 15 yards, but fired wide of the bottom left corner. Tosin Olufemi’s cross from the right was headed back across goal by Foxley, but was flagged offside. Conor Branson struck a knuckle-ball free kick but wide of the goal from 30 yards. Walker cut inside from the right wing and passed to Sykes, he laid the ball off to Chris Regis on the right, and crossed into the middle where Walker had continued his run, but headed over the bar. Ryan Henshaw headed off target from Foxley’s corner but was adjudged to have fouled the defender in the process. Moments after returning to the field suffering treatment for a head injury, Henshaw’s header back to Jack Giddens fell short and Stephenson took the ball round Giddens and initially took it too far, the first shot was saved but he converted the rebound despite the best efforts of Olufemi on the goal line. Morrell’s low cross into the six yard box was perfect for a tap-in but no team-mate was there to convert. Foxley cut in off the right wing but his left footed shot missed the target, Ben Atkinson fired wide after winning a tackle in the midfield, and Regis’ deflected effort from the right side of the box nearly crept in but Zan-Luk Leban recovered to save.

HT 0-1

Half time substitute Ola Ogunwamide controlled and volleyed Foxley’s left wing cross, but it was blocked at close range by Rudy Misambo. Foxley fired over the bar from a free kick, and Ollie Peters crossed into the middle for Sykes, but a poor first touch meant he didn’t get a chance to shoot as the ball was cleared. Morrell tried his luck from long range but missed the target. Stephenson should have doubled his lead but Mark Haines brilliantly intercepted a poor touch when the striker unexpectedly received the ball at the far post from a left wing cross. From the resulting corner, Giddens reacted superbly to save Branson’s near post header, before Jack Leckie deflected Foxley’s shot into Leban’s arms. Andre Goldfrinne came off the bench for his home debut, and was straight into the action with a low fizzed cross that had too much pace on it for Foxley as he slid into the six yard box. Peters crossed into the middle from a short corner, but Henshaw’s header was saved by Leban, and in second half injury time, Foxley was slipped through on goal by Goldfrinne’s header, but he was pushed wide by the defender and he couldn’t hit the target as he struck off balance.
