Banbury United 2-2 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report

Banbury United 2-2 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 21/11/23

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

Banbury United twice came from a goal down as Bishop’s Stortford picked up a second point away from home this season at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium. The Blues went ahead through Ryan Charles, and Mbunya Alemanji restored the lead with his fourth goal in three matches for the club.

Ben Marlow was dispossessed in midfield by Ade Yussuf but he dragged his shot wide early on, before Manny Adebowale tackled Harry Parsons as he dribbled towards goal, with the defender staying on his feet and he came away with the ball. Charles opened the scoring on 22 minutes, running on to a pass over the defence, he cut inside onto his right foot and found the bottom right corner form the middle of the box. Gio McGregor’s free kick from the left wing curled and dipped but Jack Harding did well to hang on to the ball at his near post. In first-half injury time, Yussuf ran through, beating the offside trap and scored low past Jack Giddens to go int at the break level.

HT 1-1

Alemanji was pulled down in the box for a certain penalty three minutes into the second half, his slow run up to the spot kick sent Harding the wrong way and he slotted home into the bottom left corner. Giddens’ smart reactions preserved the lead on 59 minutes when he tipped a powerful volley from 25 yards onto the crossbar, with Harrison Sodje clearing for a corner, which Stortford defended. Puritans substitute thought he had equalised when the ball broke to him inside the box, he went round Giddens but Haines covered the goal line and hooked the ball away from danger, with home fans already celebrating before it had crosssed the line. Finn Tapp’s header at the back post from the resulting corner was pushed away with a great reflex stop by Giddens, but from the following corner kick, Tai Fleming jumped highest and headed into the top right corner. Substitute Aaron Greene dribbled into the box from the left wing, he cut the ball back looking for debutant Osman Sow, but the defender beat the striker to the ball and cleared the danger.
