No walk in the park
The Blues had to battle for a point tonight at Meadow Park against a “physical” Boreham Wood side. The Blues started brightly and forged in to the box from every angle, Kyle Vassell from the right and George Sykes from the left. Four half chances were followed up by a strong run by Vassell, his eventual shot came a yard out from the goal line but it was hit with venom and went in off the far post. Boreham Wood soon brought the score back level as a looping header from a fleeting visitor to the Blues last season, Donovan Simmonds, went over the head of Sam Cowler. Wood took the lead just a minute later when a cross in to the box went unchecked and Matthew Ball volleyed it in.
As the second half got under way it was clear that the Blues felt hard done by and they battled to make amends with good shots on target coming from Ashley Miller and Vassell. The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute as Sean Francis headed in a Matt Johnson free kick. Vassell was outstanding upfront and really deserved a second goal as he hit an absolute scorcher at the Wood goal but James Russell dived well and managed to tip it around the post. Callum McNaughton had been threatening at set pieces all night and had won nearly every header, his last effort coming the closest skimming the crossbar. The Blues had to defend a free kick on the edge of the area just before full-time to take their first point of the Skrill South campaign.
Also in action tonight were Chelmsford City v Concord Rangers where it also finished 2-2, the Blues climb to 13th in the table.
