Looking back – Blues v Basingstoke

wet1Blues fan Andrew Bubien has gone back to the dark days of the 1998/99 season for this week’s featured programme against Basingstoke.

With the club’s future in real doubt and Woodside Park (barely) under construction this Isthmian League Cup tie was played at Dagenham’s Victoria Road ground.wet2

Blues were struggling near the foot of the table (and went on to be relegated) while Basingstoke were mid table having also had a good run in the F A Cup. The 97 hardy souls who turned up that night were treated to nine goals with Stortford winning 5-4.

Unfortunately it was later discovered that we had fielded an ineligible player and Basingstoke were awarded the tie. Having used a similar number of players as last season, it was understandable how the mistake happened.
Although we produced a slimmed down programme that night it was still a decent read.
