Goals from youngsters Alfie Mason and Olly Miles gave Blues their fourth straight win and intensified Whitehawk’s relegation worries on Saturday.
The visitors certainly did it the hard way, arriving at 2.55pm following a horrendous journey, and being forced to kick off 30 minutes after getting off the coach.
But even with a depleted squad – Steve Smith and Jamie Cureton were only able to name three substitutes – Stortford did enough to take the three points and move up to tenth in the table.
Unsurprisingly the Blue Brazil started slowly, with the hosts Yannis Ambroisine and Connor Tighe going close, with the latter seeing a free-kick hit both posts.
Blues slowly fought their way back into the game and took the lead in the 22nd minute when the home side failed to clear Jamie Cureton’s free-kick and Mason pounced on the loose ball to fire home.
Mason could have doubled his tally three minutes later when he fired over from long range, but there was little else of note after Stortford reached half-time with a single goal lead.
Tighe completed the set of bits of the woodwork to hit as he struck the bar with a 50th minute free kick, and the visitors were forced to soak up the pressure early in the second half.
As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes both Jack Thomas and Arthur Janita did well to keep Stortford ahead before they killed the game off in the 88th minute.
Hawks’ goalkeeper Melvin Minter charged forward for a corner and was caught out as Blues cleared, leaving Miles with time to charge down the pitch and fire into an empty net.
