Cup dream over for young Blues – full report and pics added
The match was goal-less until the half-hour mark but United took the lead at that point and once they had netted again before the break it looked as though there was only going to be one result.
The occasion seemed to overawe Stortford who never got going and didn’t show their usual free-flowing style of play. It was a very subdued performance with the midfield unable to get a grip on the proceedings during the tie.
They were on the back-foot from the start with keeper Jarvis Monk making an early save from Callum Jones and continuing the pressure Jones struck the bar in the 10th minute although an offside decision had been given anyway. There was another smart save by Monk in the 13th minute when Noah Chilvers hit an angled drive from just inside the box.
However, Stortford were close to going ahead in the 22nd minute. Ben King’s corner from the left was met by a Marcus Crowther’s back post header and keeper George Phillips had to stretch to push the ball away from inside the upright.
DEAN AGER gave the hosts the lead after 30 minutes netting from 23 yards with a deflected strike after an attack had only been half cleared (1-0). The same player scored the second goal seven minutes later when cutting in from the right he fastened on to Andre Hasanally’s fine through pass and fired past Monk (2-0).
Ager was close to adding a further goal five minutes from the break with a long range effort just over the bar whilst Monk was in action soon afterwards saving from Ollie Sims. .
