Blues win 17-goal thriller – report & pics added
The visitors took a 70th minute lead through former Blue Lewis Smith, only to see a fine own goal from Hussain Jaffa level things up six minutes later.
Many, many people scored from the spot – including debutant Blues’ academy player Olly Miles – before Tilbury missed the 15th spot kick and Cureton stepped forward to send Stortford into the last 16.
There were a couple of new faces in the Stortford starting eleven with Hector Kyprianou and Sam Baffour making their first outings. Kyprianou is on a work experience loan from Leyton Orient whilst Baffour is a well-travelled player who comes to the ProKit (UK) Stadium on a dual registration with Essex Senior League side Redbridge.
Blues began well and Lewis Byrne-Hewitt was almost through in the fourth minute as Alfie Mason’s through pass dissected the visitors’ defence. Johnville Renee, returning after suspension, went close after a Jordan Wescott free-kick was cleared by the Tilbury defence.
Stortford forced a lot of corners in the early stages and when keeper Jamie Merralls flapped at a Mason corner he somehow managed to scramble away a close range Baffour shot away for another flag-kick. Merralls then half-saved a 20 yard effort from Mason and then, in the 18th minute, made a great one-handed save to turn a pile-driver from Mason over the bar.
Stortford’s supremacy gradually waned and the Dockers came more into the picture with Lewis Smith having an acute angled shot beaten away by Patrick Ohman at the near post five minutes before the break.
The early action on the restart followed a similar pattern with the Essex visitors shading matters in midfield where they looked slightly stronger and Lewis opened the scoring when he found time and space just inside the right-hand side of the box to shoot past Ohman.
Tilbury’s lead only lasted six minutes however as substitute Miles involved in the build-up play, found Cureton on the left and when the veteran crossed low in to the six yard box Dockers’ centre back Jaffa, with Mason lurking at the back post, only succeeded in diverting the ball into his own net.
Five minutes later Renee slipped the ball to Mason who flighted a superb long range shot past Merralls but saw it strike the far upright. Shortly afterwards, Miles was wide with far post header from a Byrne-Hewitt left-wing cross.
There was another chance for Stortford to clinch the tie before the final whistle when substitute Jack Thomas sent Byrne-Hewitt clear on goal but the striker shot straight at Merralls. When the tie entered stoppage time Stortford thought they had a clear case for a penalty when Jaffa seemed to foul Cureton in the box but referee Lee Jessup waived play on. The Dockers nearly took the tie in virtually the last action of normal time when breaking forward, substitute Harry Norman hooked the ball wide from a few yards range.
There was no extra time and when penalties were taken fourteen spot-kicks were successful and before Ohman dived to his left to save Morisi Gelashvilliâ’s kick with Cureton rounding off the procedings netting his penalty to put the Blues through to the next round.
