Blues’ hopes of moving up the Vanarama Conference South table were dashed as strugglers Staines Town scored an 82nd minute winner on Saturday.

It was the home side’s first win since August after a run of nine straight league losses.

Details below:

Blues replace Jonny Herd with George Sykes as they look for a late equaliser.

Staines make it 1-0 in the 82nd minute with a goal out of nowhere as Bassett wins the ball and sets up Worlsfold to fire past Gregory.

As Blues go in search of all three points, boss Rod Stringer makes a double substitution in the 70th minute replacing Rod Young and Phil Anderson with Sheldon Sellears and Ryan Melaugh.

It’s goalless at half-time with Ryan Auger and Rod Young having had Blues’ best chances, the latter forcing a save at full stretch from the home keeper.

George Allen marked his return to the side from injury by joining Adam Bailey -Dennis in the referee’s notebook in what has been a relatively low-key encounter.

Team news: Blues fans will have to wait for the return of skipper Anthony Church as he again misses out as an injury-hit Stortford can only name four subs. Ashley Miller is also on the injury list but Ryan Auger and George Allen return.

Danny Fitzsimons isn’t named in the matchday squad as Blues would exceed the number of loan players allowed but new signing from Aveley Lee Weemes is named on the bench against basement side Staines.

Blues: D Gregory, R Auger, J Herd, P Anderson, A Bailey-Dennis, G Allen, S McCall J Tabiri, M Suarez, R Young, F Merrifield. Subs: G Sykes, R Melaugh, S Sellears,  L Weemes.
