Blues look to boss Generals
After seeing their home game against Gosport Borough postponed just 30 minutes before kick-off on Saturday, Blues will look to return to action when they travel to Chesham United on Saturday.
The referee had inspected the PtoKit UK Stadium pitch at 1pm and passed it fit for play, but the relentless rain during the next 90 minutes meant a wasted trip for the league’s basement side.
The Generals’ 2-0 win at Royston Town last Saturday was followed up by a 5-1 victory at Gosport, and they remain the cusp of the play-off race in eighth place with 47 points from 29 games although the top four sides appear to be breaking away, leaving only fifth place to realistically play for.
The two sides met for the first time this millennium in October, and Blues were left to rue their missed chances as they drew 1-1 with a side that played the entire second half with ten men.
The visitors saw Joe Iaciofano sent off shortly before half-time when he picked up a second yellow card for time-wasting in the space of three minutes.
Chesham took the lead in the 31st minute when Iaciofona netted from inside the six yard box and it It took a well worked goal to provide the equaliser in the 71st minute with player-coach Mark Hughes firing into the net via the underside of the bar from close range.
Blues boss Kevin Watson will hope that an extra week’s rest will see veteran Josh Simpson fit to return to action, though he did have Marvel Ekpiteta available again for the Gosport game.
Top scorer Jason Williams was also unfit for Saturday’s aborted game, leaving Watson to hastily add Colchester United youngster Callum Jones to the squad on a short-term work experience deal.
