ANDREW CORNELL LOOKS BACK AT BLUES’ GAMES ON DECEMBER 4

The last match on this date was the first time we ever played a Welsh club in a league match when we faced Newport County here. The only previous games against a Welsh team had been the FA Trophy tie against Bridgend Town in 1981. Against Newport Blues started the game well and after 15 minutes deservedly took the lead. The keeper was unable to hold a shot from Steve Morison and as Martin went for the rebound he was fouled in the box and the referee awarded a penalty, converted by Dave Rainford. Stortford continued to go forward and Parmenter had a shot blocked on the line before Martin had a shot saved. At the other end Moralee could have equalised for Newport but was stretching to reach a cross and couldn’t get any power in his goal attempt. Just before half time Hakim received the ball from Morison, beat his marker and scored to give Blues a 2-0 half time lead.

In the second half Stortford were content to sit on their lead while Newport had plenty of possession without creating any good chances. Late on Stortford wrapped up the game when a poor clearance by Delve in the Newport goal went straight to parmenter. Some quick passes ended with Jackman scoring the third goal.

Fourteen years ago we played Grays Athletic in an FA Trophy replay. This was a thrilling but ultimately disappointing game after conceding a last minute equaliser in the first match. At the time Stortford were a division below Grays in the Isthmian League so the odds were against us and yet within eight minutes we were 2-0 up. First Vinnie John set up Trevor Paul who made no mistake from seven yards and then Paul’s cross found Glen Southam who scored clinically to make it 2-0. Grays got a goal back when Fiddes was left unmarked to head past Desborough after Abraham had missed an easy chance. It was not all one way as Southam hit a post but by half time Stortford still had a 2-1 lead.

Grays got just what they needed when Southgate gave them an early equaliser, converting a cross from the right at the far post. On the hour a corner was played to the edge of the area finding Southgate unmarked to score the winner. Stortford fought to the end, a little too literally as Fannon and Buffong from Grays were both sent off.

Mention must also be made of the 1948 home game with Clacton Town in the East Anglian Cup. There can’t be many Stortford players like Baird who scored a hat trick at Rhodes Avenue that day and yet ended up on the losing side.
