Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on September 29th

We have scored five goals and conceded five goals in a game in the past on this date, most recently in 2013 when Kyle Vassell hit four in a 5-0 win at Hendon in the FA Cup. Anthony Church netting the other goal.

In 2001 we faced Tooting in an Isthmian League Division One fixture. We had made a shaky start and were in the bottom half of the table while Tooting were on the edge of the promotion race. Still it was early season and the league table didn’t mean too much.

Blues started well taking the lead in the fourth minute through Troy Braham. A solo goal it was with the winger making a great run down the left before cutting in and shooting past Webb in the visitors goal. Just to show this was not a fluke, only 7 minutes later Martin Hayes beat two defenders and crossed to Braham who emphatically added his and the team’s second goal. It wasn’t all one way, McGibbon had a 30 yard free kick at the other end that went just wide of the post. However in the 26th minute Braham picked up a half cleared corner and with a shot through a crowd of players completed his hat trick. Not bad for a player with one goal in 36 games the previous season. With that Blues seemed to relax with the job done for the day and Tooting had the best chances either side of the break from Jermott and Rootes. Midway through the second half Stortford stepped up a gear and John’s perfect pass found Hayes for the fourth goal in the 71st minute. With seven minutes left Hercules set up John to score the final goal to finish the demolition of the south Londoners.

In 1990 there was a less surprising five goal haul when we were drawn away to Hellenic League Hounslow in the FA Cup. Another hat trick – this time from John Neill, along with an own goal and one from a young Leo Fortune-West saw us through to the next round 5-1.

A few years earlier still we played Wycombe Wanderers at Loakes Parke and were well beaten by 5-0. Wanderers were, unusually for them in the lower half of the table but they were far too good for Blues on the day and this was the start of a long climb up the table as they finished 3rd and were promoted to the Conference.
