Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on May 22nd
In 1974 and 1975 we finished the season on this date. In 1974 the last game was a bit of an anti-climax as we had lost our chance of winning the league the previous Saturday and had nothing to play for. Moreover Walton & Hersham’s ground was unavailable and the game was played at Slough Town’s Dolphin ground, possibly the last game played there as they moved to Wexham Park the following season. The game ended in a 1-1 draw with the goal fittingly scored by Dave Lawrence, the captain, who had done so much to make the season a success.
The following year we played our last game at home to Tooting & Mitcham United. The programme for this date was dated May 17th which was a Saturday but the game was actually played the following Thursday. If this was weather related it must be the lastest ever postponement. Tooting had a chance of finishing fourth if they won the game while Blues had nothing to play for. Inevitably then the visitors scored in the third minute through a Dave Juneman header. Midway through the first half Bobby Green made it 2-0 from a breakaway and that’s how it remained at half time.
Any hope of a Blues fight back was dashed as Juneman made it 3-0 early in the second half before Lee Smelt made saves from Aers, Amos and Grubb. Just before the hour mark a fourth goal from Ron Howell stirred Blues into action and Ray Little reduced the arrears in the 70th minute. Vic Akers – who went on to manage Arsenal Ladies for 22 years – finished off the scoring with Tooting’s fifth goal late on.
