Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on May 20th and 21st
As far as we know, Blues have never played a game on May 19th, and our only game on May 20 was a narrow win over Ilford in 1968. The game was in semi-final of the Essex Floodlight Competition and we faced an Ilford side who were a league higher than us then being members of the Isthmian League while we were still in the Athenian League. The only Stortford goal was scored by Dave Gough. Unsurprisingly the final against Barking was held over until the following season when we eventually won the competition 6-5 on aggregate.
A successful 1965-66 season which had seen us win the Athenian League Division 1 Championship ended with a win at Ware in the Herts Charity Cup final on May 21st.. It’s not clear why this game was played so late, our last league game had been on 30th April and since then we had played two warm up friendlies and a challenge match against a combined Athenian League Division One team to prepare for the final . Maybe Ware had fixture congestion problems. The game was a high scoring one with four different scorers for Stortford.
