Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on May 14th
On this day in the extended 1973-74 season we played our penultimate home league game of the campaign against near neighbours Hitchin Town. With Wycombe Wanderers and Hendon both dropping points a win here was vital to keep our championship hopes alive.
There were chances for both sides early on with Dave Lawrence shooting wide and then a great save by Terry Moore from Howard Kettleborough preventing Hitchin from taking the lead. Stortford had the better of the first half but it seemed that a combination of fatigue and nerves would prevent them getting the reward their play deserved. A minute before half time came the breakthrough. Martin Smith’s long range shot was pushed onto the bar by Tim Saward and Peter Leakey was on hand to head in the rebound to give the home side a narrow 1-0 lead at the break.
Roy Mitchell was again one of the better performers as Blues took control of the game in the second half. It took only eight minutes to double the lead when following a superb move Leakey spotted Saward off his line and brilliantly chipped the Hitchin keeper. It was Mitchell who finished off the scoring 10 minutes from time. Having not been a regular in the team previously it is impossible to say whether he was fresher than the other players or whether he had something to prove but he scored a great goal. Cutting into the penalty area and rounding two defenders he proceeded to hit a powerful shot past Saward to make it 3-0 and keep Blues league hopes alive.
