Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on May 11th

On this day in 1974 Bishop’s Stortford FC completed their treble, having already won the FA Amateur Cup and London Senior Cup they faced Cheshunt at Hertford Town’s ground in the Herts Senior Cup Final. Not only had Blues been playing 3 games a week for a month but they had to deal with having lost a 32 game unbeaten record only two days earlier at home to Leytonstone.

In front of a 2000 crowd Stortford did suffer a hangover from the Leytonstone game in that they allowed Cheshunt to take the lead in the 11th minute. It was a bizarre goal as John Still headed the ball on to his own bar, the rebound then hit goalkeeper Terry Moore in the back and then trickled over the line. Blues fought back but mental and physical fatigue meant they were not at their best and Cheshunt were able to defend the lead until just before half time. Suddenly Blues were given a lifeline as John Still was fouled in the box and Martin Smith scored with the penalty to send the teams in at half time level.

It was telling that the best player was Roy Mitchell who had not been a regular and was therefore fresher and was regularly sending in dangerous crosses. The second half saw Stortford gradually gaining the upper hand, but still not looking as dangerous as they could. Finally in the 71st minute Tony Bass received the ball close to goal, spun quickly and slotted the ball past the keeper for a rare (for him) goal without using his head. Two minutes later John Dear had the ball in the net from a header but this was disallowed for an unknown offence. Nevertheless once ahead Blues had no problem holding off Cheshunt to take the cup.

We have also played a Herts Charity Cup final on this day, losing in 1957 to St Albans City and were beaten by Boreham Wood in a 1972 semi-final in the same competition
