Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on May 6th
The most important game on this date was definitely the last game of the 1994-95 season at home to Aylesbury United. Blues had been promoted the previous season but had struggled at the higher level. The last game saw us in 20th place, one point behind Chesham United and safety with a better goal difference. We were facing fourth placed Aylesbury – who were in the League Cup final 48 hours later – while Chesham were at home to the champions Enfield. Neither opponent had anything to play for.
On the day Blues won their game thanks to goals from Will Cooper and Andy Walker with only the one in reply from Jon Blencowe for Aylesbury. When news came in that Chesham lost 3-0 to Enfield and we survived in the Isthmian Premier Division.
Apart from the end of season league games on this day we have played cup games as well. In 1985 we played the first leg of the Eastern Floodlight Competition final against Thanet United, which was the name Margate were briefly known as. The game at Rhodes Avenue was won 2-1 with goals from Pat Staunton and Harper and Blues wrapped up the trophy in the second leg at Hartsdown Park a few days later. Meanwhile in 1971 we lost 3-1 at home to Barking in the Essex Floodlight Competition semi-final. This game was probably taken more seriously than the competition would suggest as Barking were at that time members of the Isthmian League which we had just been elected too and so it was a chance to test ourselves against the future opposition.
