Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on May 4th
Although amateur football was abolished in 1974, hence Blues being the last winners of the FA Amateur Cup it took a while for the new format of non-league football to settle down. However in the 1975-76 season the Herts FA agreed that the Herts Senior Cup would go open and invited Watford FC to take part. At that time Watford were in the old Football League Division Four but were still far and away the strongest club in Hertfordshire with Barnet and Stevenage (not the current club) both just average Southern League clubs.
As it happened Stortford made the final and faced Watford at neutral Hitchin. Watford put out enough of an experienced side to be considered favourites as Blues were rebuilding with only Peter Leakey still left from the Amateur Cup winning side.
Stortford started well though and in the 10th minute Peter Twigg’s header forced a great save from Rankin, the former Everton goalkeeper. Just after the half hour another scare for Watford asa Kevin Mulkern shot from 20 yards into the top corner, only for the effort to be disallowed for offside. This stung Watford into action and Mercer shot just over the bar with a spectacular overhead kick but in the 39th minute it was Blues who deservedly took the lead. A great corner from captain Peter Leakey was met with a glancing header by John MacKenzie for the first goal. Stortford held the lead until half time but must have expected Watford to come back at them in the second half.
Watford switched their centre half Horsfield to a strikers role and the ploy worked as he got on the end of a long ball down the middle and hammered an equaliser past Paul Kitson. For the next 15 minutes it was all Watford but Blues weathered the storm with some good defending and then regained the lead in the 70th minute when a great move ended with Peter Watson lobbing Rankin. From then on it was all Stortford with Gough and Watson having chances before MacKenzie scored the third goal from a Leakey free kick to wrap up the win.
