Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on May 2

May 2nd has often been the last day of the season over the years and as such has seen its share of meaningless matches and cup finals, according to how the season has gone.

1998 was probably the most dramatic of these. Blues were in 19th place ahead of Yeading on goals scored only. The last day fixtures were Blues away to Chesham United, 4 places and 4 points ahead of us and Yeading at home to 12th placed Harrow. The match at Chesham was a tense affair, for Blues fans anyway, and ended in a 1-1 draw, our goal courtesy of Mark Taylor on loan from Leyton Orient. Eventually the news came through that Yeading had also drawn and Stortford stayed up with 53 goals to Yeading’s 49.

The biggest game on this date though was our play-off semi-final at home to Salisbury City in 2007. With Blues only 3 games away from a place in the Conference National Division a crowd of 1049 turned up for the mid-week game against the league runners up. We had lost to Salisbury early in the season but been prevented from getting a win at home by a last minute goal so it was all up for grabs.

Both teams seemed nervous at the start but it was the visitors who created the first real chance. Scott Bartlett’s cross found Paul Sales but he headed over the bar from 12 yards. Blues were pressing now though as they got into the game after 15 minutes Max Porter set up Greg Pearson whose shot was on target but without enough power to trouble Ryan Clarke in the Salisbury goal. Minutes later Alex Martin’s corner was met by Jack Midson, whose header was just over the bar. On the half hour mark a throw from Bartlett caused panic in the Stortford penalty area but Andrew Young saved well from Luke Prince. It was all action now as Sales flick found Matthew Tubbs whose volley was just wide of the post from 30 yards, while close to half time Sales had a shot himself that was deflected wide.

Tubbs had another chance early in the second half but put the ball over before Stortford took the lead in the 54th minute. Craig Edwards found Pearson in the box with his back to goal. A great turn saw the Blues striker beat Clarke from 7 yards. Minutes later Ashley Fuller put Pearson through with a chance for a second but Clarke was equal to the shot this time. Just after the hour mark the West Country side were level as Prince’s cross was met by the sub Robert Matthews who had only just come on but was able to beat Young from 7 yards. Both teams had further chances but nerves came back into play as the chance of scoring a winner was weighed against the possibility of conceding a vital goal and a draw was probably a fair result. Eventually Blues were to lose the second leg in extra time but this must have been one of the biggest evening games played at Woodside.
