Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 26th
In 1988 on this day former BSFC President Eddie Bentley died at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow after having suffered a heart attack. Eddie had been an active servant of the football club for many years. That same evening the Herts Charity Cup final was played at Clarence Park and Blues beat St Albans City 3-0.
In 2003 we played Maidenhead United at home. A run of 11 wins in 14 games had seen us safe from relegation but with the pressure off Blues got careless in this game. At half time we were 2-0 down to goals by O’Connor and Allen and when Yaku made it 3-0 after 55 minutes it seemed it could have become embarrassing. It got worse as Allen made it 4-0 on 69 minutes but Blues found some fight then and scored 3 times through Haniff, Southam and then a great chip from Martin Hayes on 88 minutes. It was too little too late though and we still lost the game 4-3.
More recently in recent years we have three times played a promotion chasing team on this date.
In 2008 our visitors were Bath City who had an outside chance of making the play offs if they could win at Bishop’s Stortford while we were comfortably ensconced in mid-table. After a goal less first half where Blues had the best chances through Matt Jones, Ahmed Deen and Greg Pearson it was Bath who took the lead in the 76th minute through Sam Foley. Even with nothing to play for Stortford fought back and Deen put in a great cross to find Pearson who made no mistake to score the equaliser. Blues could have gone on to win the game but Bath held on for a point which was not enough for them in the end, even with other results going their way.
In 2006 we visited Histon and suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat with Gareth Gwillim scoring his first two goals for Blues against his current employers. Blues had nothing to play for but Histon did in fact make the play offs. The first half was goal less but within a few minutes of the restart the score was 1-1, Danny Bloomfield’s goal for Histon answered immediately by Gareth. On the hour Histon took the lead through Bloomfield again and seemed to have made the points safe 5 minutes later. However Gwillim scored again in the 87th minute to make it a nervy last few minutes for Histon.
The previous year Blues still had a mathematical chance of the playoffs themselves when they visited Eastbourne. An injury hit Stortford needed a win to maintain any realistic promotion hopes and they took the lead through Richard Howell from an Alex Martin corner on 25 minutes. Richard was later to be stretchered off and Eastbourne gradually came back into the game but Blues hung on until a heartbreaking equaliser on 86 minutes. Eastbourne took advantage and went all the way to a North-South playoff final before losing to Altrincham.
