Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 25th

In 2009 there was an unusual event in that we played in a club’s last ever game – at least at the professional level. Team Bath were controversial, not least because of thoughts that they were subsidised by the tax payer but after letting them play in Conference South they were informed that would not be eligible for promotion if they ever qualified and they took the decision to fold with their final game coming against the Blues.

Mark Simpson was again forced to change his central defensive pairing, with Paul Goodacre, Grant Cooper and Stevland Angus all unavailable, and Tom Champion being partnered by Ritchie Jones. Stortford started positively, with Danny Harris almost putting Lewis Smith through on goal in the opening five minutes. Harris and Smith then combined aerially to play a headed one-two from Danny Green’s long throw, with Harris’ final effort looping into Jake Meredith’s arms.

Lewis Smith then set up a good chance for Rory Hill, dribbling around three Team Bath players before laying it off for Hill to strike just wide of the post.

Minutes later, Team Bath scored the opening goal when a misjudgement of the offside trap by the Blues defence left Shaun Bennison in space, and Bennison beat Nicky Eyre before squaring for Josh Llewellyn to strike into an empty net.

This galvanised the Students, and both Llewellyn and Takumi Ake headed wide following set pieces from Marc Canham. Danny Green put a free-kick wide of the goal at the other end, before Team Bath increased their lead when Canham’s free-kick caused confusion in the box and Gary Warren nodded the ball down for Llewellyn to score his second past Nicky Eyre.

Five minutes later, Lewis Smith picked up a weak back-pass in front of goal, but his shot was wide of the post. Shaun Bennison then had two good chances in quick succession, the second of which was well saved by Nicky Eyre.

A dull start to the second half was brightened up by the introduction of Roy Essandoh, whose aerial presence caused significant problems for the Team Bath defence. On 66 minutes, Essandoh nodded on a Danny Green long throw to Tom Champion, whose header was straight at Meredith. Then Green again set up Essandoh, but his shot was again too close to the Team Bath keeper.   The home side had a great chance to put the result beyond doubt, but Matt Jones charged down Takumi Ake’s shot with Nicky Eyre beaten.

Stortford continued to push and began to dominate the game, with substitutes David Chick and James Lindie injecting pace and purpose into the midfield. The visitors’ efforts were rewarded when Essandoh headed on a long ball, and David Chick timed a perfect pass to Lewis Smith, who beat Jake Meredith with a low shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

By this stage, Stortford’s chances were coming thick and fast, and Essandoh had two further shots on goal before Danny Green broke free on the right and made for goal but was impeded by a push from behind. However, Jake Meredith got down well to his left and pushed Green’s penalty away towards the corner flag, where it was collected by James Lindie. Lindie’s cross eventually came to David Chick, whose shot was pushed onto the outside of the post by the Team Bath keeper.

Two minutes into stoppage time, the Blues finally got a deserved equaliser when a Lewis Smith cross caused a goalmouth scramble and Essandoh put a decisive shot into the roof of the net after Meredith saved an initial effort. The draw saw Stortford finish the season in 9th place on goal difference from Newport County.
