Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on April 3rd

Perhaps the most significant game on this date was way back in 1961 when we played the Delphian League Cup final losing 3-1 to Brentwood & Warley. With all due respect to the Delphian League Cup, what marked out this game was that it was Ken Yates’ last game for Stortford. The last game of a 14 year career starting in 1947 in which he played 402 games and scored at least 228 goals – there are games in which he played where it has not been possible to trace the scorer. More goals for BSFC than anyone else by a long way – Dickie Horton is second on 156, Ken is also fifth on the all-time appearance list. Worth remembering that in those pre-floodlight days almost all games were on Saturdays and 30 league games a season was the norm. Ken could have signed for Spurs but in the days of the maximum wage for footballers he felt that a teaching career combined with amateur football was the better option – unfortunately for him, this resulted in teaching Ladderman for a bit.

There were no big honours for Stortford in his days – the Delphian League title in 1955 was his only league championship along with a couple of Herts Senior Cups. Typical of the man is that he broke a toe early in the game in the 1960 Herts Senior Cup final, but with no substitutes allowed in those days had it strapped up and scored the winning goal with the injured foot.

On this date it was a home game against Gloucester City two days after the Easter Monday draw at Boston. Although Harry Baker had a chance in the second minute it was the visitors who took charge of possession early on with Tom Webb going close in the six minute before Darren Edwards hit a miscued shot past Carl Pentney from 10 yards. Blues gradually got into the game and just past the half hour Reece Prestedge forced a good save from Mike Green with a shot from 25 yards. There were more chances but the equaliser when it came was a little bizarre. Billy Lobjoit (left) chased down a back pass and although Green got there first his clearance hit Lobjoit and rebounded into the net to level the scores at half time.

Pentney had to make two quick saves early in the second half but Stortford were dominant again with Baker and Lobjoit both having chances around the hour mark. Against the run of play Gloucester scored again from a corner in the 64th minute. Stortford pressed forward for most of the second half but without having a real bite in attack. Woodall went close in the 71st minute and as the game went into stoppage time Bailey-Dennis and Woodall again both had chances but the Gloucester defence had the game under control really and it was not a surprise that they managed to hold out.
