Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on – April 19th

There have been a lot of games played on this date as traditionally fixture congestion kicks in and even in the days before floodlights it was possible to play early evening midweek games. However when we complain about fixture congestion today spare a thought for the Stortford team of 1934-35 who had to play two games on the same day. By late April we still had two games left to play against Staines Town in the Spartan League and they were played as two 70 minute games at Rhodes Avenue, back to back. Stortford won both and played the same XI in both games. Who says players nowadays are fitter and more professional?

Our most recent opponents on this date were Sutton United and in 2005 we also faced the Surrey side as we were chasing a fast disappearing chance of a play off place after the FA Trophy semi-final. Sutton were (successfully) fighting relegation that year while Blues were to play 11 games in April. It was a closely fought game with Blues starting off well on top, with Paul Hakim hitting the bar very early on. We did take the lead in the 22nd minute when a Gareth Gwillim cross was only punched out as far as Steve Parmenter who found the net with a looping header. Sutton came back into the game after this and forced some saves from Andy Young but the first half ended at 1-0.

Stortford started the second half well and soon doubled their lead with Steve Morison beating two men before providing Alex Martin with a great chance to score which was well taken. Against the run of play Sutton then pulled a goal back through a Jeff Vansittart header before Stortford restored their advantage a few minutes later, Steve Morison again the provider for Paul Hakim. After this Stortford controlled the game well, only conceding a very later goal to Brake but confidently taking the points.

Most games played on this date have been league games as the season comes to a climax but the most recent game was a Herts Charity Cup final three years ago against Cheshunt when we won on penalties and in 1989 we played the Herts Senior Cup Final at Rhodes Avenue against a strong Watford side. We held our own for the first half hour or so thanks to a Francis Cowley goal but on a heavy pitch Watford eventually ran away with the game winning 5-1. Within a few weeks John Radford had resigned as manager and some of the best players in a promising side had been sold due to budget cutbacks.
