Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 22nd

In 2008 we had the short trip to Welling for a vital league game which we had to win to sustain any chances of reaching the play offs for the second successive year.

The performance was a distinct improvement on recent outings and, on another night, three points would not have been undeserved. but the combination of a couple of freakish goals, missed opportunities and a referee with an allergy for penalties was Blues’ final undoing.

Early chances saw Orlando Smith blast over Joe Welch’s bar and Loui Fazakerley stretch to connect with Ahmed Deen’s cross – unsuccessfully.

The goal came out of a black hole. On 19 minutes Brighton loanee Sonny Cobbs picked up a loose ball 30 yards out. almost nonchalantly he unleashed an incredible shot that flew past the watching Welch to stun the travelling support.

Deen tested United’s Jamie Turner for the first time three minutes later. His shot cum cross was heading for the top corner of the goal until Turner leaped to tip the ball over. Four minutes later Deen went one better. His free kick from the right was missed by everyone and bounced into the net for the equaliser.

Blues nearly took the lead two minutes later. Danny Harris went one on one with Turner, but a heavy touch meant he had to stretch to beat Turner to the ball. He connected but faintly and Robbie Ryan was on hand to clear from near the welling line.

Blues were well on top, but the Wings next foray upfield resulted in the winning goal. Orlando Smith burst into the Stortford box but the ball appeared to be smothered by Welch. Blues’ fans were stunned to then see the ball in the back of the net after Welch appeared to lose the ball to give Smith the easiest of goals.

Stortford pushed hard in the second half for the goals that would resurrect their play off hopes. on 50 minutes Harris headed over from Fazakerley’s cross. It was to be Harris’ final contribution as the youngster made way for Pearson as Hayes threw his dice one last time.

After the hour Matt Jones went close with a shot that rasped past the right hand post. A minute later Jones supplied the free kick that gave Pearson his best chance to score. Goodacre headed on the free kick and Pearson was quick to react, shooting low and well, but Turner saved down at his right hand post.

Blues continued to pour forward. Fazakerley’s shot on 70 minutes was cleared off the line by Kamara before United’s Chris Moore seemed to cuddle the ball in the box. Referee Collins saw nothing. Then, on 83 minutes, came a moment that sealed Blues’ fate. Sos Yao’s cross found Fazakerley in the box. he turned and shot in a flash but, with Turner beaten, the ball flashed inches wide of the post.
