Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 10th

By an interesting coincidence we have played Maidenhead four times on this day, in consecutive years, 1970 and 1971 and in 2010 and 2014. The first ended in a win by 4-1 but the second didn’t go too well for us as following an injury to goalkeeper Alan Cherry we lost 9-0. Both these games were at York Road.

In 2010 we met the same opponents at Woodside Park. We both had similar records as we were 16th to Maidenhead’s 17th in the table. Relegation worries were almost gone for both teams but one more win would make it certain. The first half was fairly even with the home side having slightly the better of the play but not goals, although Danny Morgan and Leon Antoine both went close. However the visitors took the lead in the 32nd minute when from a throw, a chip found Kieran Knight unmarked and he did not waste his opportunity.

Hopes of Blues getting back into the game early in the second half were dashed on 54 minutes as Jamal Fyfield caught the back four on the hop and scored Maidenhead’s second. Minutes later Ali Abdullahi crossed but Danny Morgan was not able to convert this to a goal. Just before the hour mark a great free kick from Scott Shulton gave Stortford a lifeline and made the score 2-1. However although Blues put a lot of pressure on the Maidenhead defence they didn’t seem sharp enough to cause any anxiety where it mattered and just before the defeat was confirmed Danny Morgan was sent off for an apparent headbutt on Collins.

There was a win in though 2001 as Blues chased promotion but there was more significance to the game than the 3 points gained from a win away to Wealdstone. The second goal of the game was the 85th league goal of the season breaking the record haul achieved in 1981. This was not a good performance against the hosts who had relegation worries. Blues took the lead inside the first 10 minutes when Glen Southam tapped in a rebound after the ball came back off the bar. It all looked too easy and so it was to prove as Wealdstone fought back with an equaliser midway through the first half. A poor clearance found its way to Tilbury who scored with a great shot from 30 yards. After that it was all Wealdstone for a while with chances from Hingley and Butterfield but Stortford made it to half time all square.

After the break Butterfield had a better chance when he hit the bar on the hour and it then took a crucial tackle by Risley on Tilbury to save Blues. Stortford gradually got back into the game though and looked more comfortable without necessarily being able to force a win when Braham’s shot was handled on the line in the 84th minute. The referee had no hesitation and Martin Hayes used his experience to give Stortford a valuable 3 points.
