Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 8th

In 2014 we made the trip to Hampshire to face Farnborough in a league game, and went down 4-2.

Brian Woodall hit his third goal in three games as an injury-hit Bishop’s Stortford side fell short in a goal-laden game at Farnborough on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old’s recent form has given a glimpse of what might have been. Had the former Dagenham & Redbridge striker found his goalscoring touch a month or two earlier, then perhaps the play-off would have been more than just a distant dream.

Farnborough began the game 15th in the Skrill South table, with the Blues in 12th. Rod Stringer was forced to put out a depleted side, missing key players such as Sean Francis, Callum McNaughton, Anthony Church and Rod Young.

The hosts went ahead on 24 minutes when a long free kick from Matt Ball was fumbled by Joe Wright and defender Josh Huggins was first to react. Farnborough doubled their lead four minutes before the break when striker Phil Page struck home to complete a dominant half for them.

Stringer made a substitution for the second half with Harry Baker replacing Sam Cutler and it wasn’t long before Ryan Melaugh came on for Jake Hall six minutes in. The changes seemed to work as Woodall struck just two minutes later, taking advantage of slack defending, to give the Blues a foothold back into the game. However, a free-kick from Farnborough’s Matt Ball restored their advantage on the hour mark.

Woodall was replaced by young striker Josh Fagbohun six minutes later. Akurang, who’d been playing in central defence, to cover for the absent McNaughton and Francis, reduced the hosts’ advantage on 75 minutes, netting from a corner. However, just a minute later, Huggins hit his second to peg back the Blues once more.

In the closing moments a melee involving players from both sides saw Tyrone Berry booked for the hosts as well as Blues defender George Allen while Akurang headed over late on. With just two minutes of added time at the end of the match Stortford were unable to find the goals they needed.
