Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 13th

In 2013 we had a long trip to the Manchester area to face Altrincham in a Conference North game. There were a couple of changes to Stortford’s starting eleven compared with the side that had travelled in midweek to FC Halifax Town. Having served his one match suspension Adam Bailey- Dennis returned to the defence whilst Billy Lobjoit played up front alongside Brian Woodall.

The Robins went ahead in the 3rd minute following a move along the left flank. James Lawrie set Nicky Clee away down the wing and the cross to the far post seemed to hit the thigh or leg of Carl Rodgers before the ball beat Carl Pentney and ran over the goal-line in slow motion. Two minutes later Simon Richman’s solo run through the Blues defence ended with a low shot close

past Pentney’s left upright. Stortford remained under pressure and another cross from the left by

Clee in the 15th minute was flicked away to safety by Bailey-Dennis at the back post after

the ball had gone across the face of the goal.

Lawrie was just wide with a low shot and its wasn’t until the 24th minute that the Blues

conjured up their first real threat at goal with Lobjoit heading the ball on for Woodall to

volley wide from the edge of the box. Stortford’s first corner of the match arrived in the 27th minute but it came to nothing.

On the half-hour Damian Reeves headed inches over the Stortford bar after a cross from the right by skipper Shaun Densmore but then three minutes later at the other end Woodall’s pass sent Lobjoit breaking on the left. However the youngster’s low cross was held by the grounded Stuart Coburn and even if the Altrincham stopper had not held on to the ball there would have been no one on hand in the penalty box to take advantage. Then a long clearance by Pentney fell to Brian

Woodall who struck a first time low 25 yarder that was held by keeper Coburn diving at full length to his right.

Densmore’s cross-cum-shot from the right in the 38th minute swung away at the far post at the last moment with Pentney watching the ball all the way and in virtually the final action of the half, after Reece Prestedge had been fouled, Matt Johnson’s free-kick from outside the box was high over the bar.

Five minutes after the restart Reeves just missed contact with another Densmore cross

towards the six yard box but then the Blues enjoyed a better spell of play. In the 52nd minute Prestedge carried the ball up the inside left channel before laying it forward for Johnson to take

  1. However, the midfielder, having done the hard work outwitting and going past a defender placed his shot over the bar from just inside the box.

Then when the Blues’ skipper was fouled Lobjoit’s free-kick went past the defensive wall and

inches wide of Coburn’s near post. Incidents at both ends continued and Lawrie put his shot

over the top in the 56th minute after another cross into the middle from Densmore. The Robins

captain was involved at the other end of the pitch shortly afterwards as Woodall and Lobjoit linked on the right and when the latter crossed to the near post Densmore sliced his clearance

into the air and Coburn was forced to turn the ball over the bar.

Reeves’ first chance to get on the scoresheet with a clear cut opportunity came in the 63rd

minute when Clee slotted the ball down the middle but with just Pentney to beat Reeves shot

wide to the right of the target. Stortford, facing the elements in the second half, came back a minute later as a surging solo run by Lobjoit took him deep into Altrincham territory. When he was tackled and the ball broke it ran to Harry Baker who blasted a drive from the angle of the box and flew close past the near upright.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 67th minute following a move up the left touch-line. Matt Doughty and Clee combined and when Clee crossed to the left central edge of the box Lawrie

fired a shot high into the net over Pentney.

The Robins could have extended their lead in the 78th minute as Rodgers sent Reeves clear for

goal but his heavy touch resulted in the ball running out for a goal-kick. Then minutes later Lawrie headed narrowly over the bar.

Stortford pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute. After being awarded a free-kick Matt Johnson slipped the ball out to the left where Woodall worked himself into space before unleashing a low

drive from 20 yards that beat Coburn at his near post. The hosts now looked edgy and began to drop deeper. Blues substitute Ricky Sappleton advanced on goal but his attempt at goal from outside the box lacked power and Coburn easily held the shot. Then in the 88th minute Altincham central defender Gianluca Havern headed away a Woodall cross at the near post and under pressure from Bailey-Dennis but the resultant corner came to nothing.

There were five minutes of stoppage time at the conclusion of the match and the Blues twice went close to grabbing an equaliser. Baker played the ball up the right flank and when Havern missed his clearance Sappleton gained control of the loose ball but the striker flashed an angled shot wide of the near post from 15 yards. In Stortford’s last attack of the game Baker’s deep cross

from the right was held by keeper Coburn just above Bailey-Dennis’ head.
