Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 6th

It is an interesting coincidence that we have been on the wrong end of a 6-3 scoreline three times on this date. The first time was a friendly at the end of the 1945-46 season, it happened again at home to Aylesbury United in an Isthmian Premier Division game in 1996 and most recently against Newport County in 2005.

Another coincidence is that on this date we have twice faced Welsh opposition. In 2013 our visitors were Colwyn Bay from North Wales while back in 2005, sandwiched between the two legs of our FA Trophy Semi-Final we faced what was then a long mid-week trip to Newport County. This was our first match in Wales for almost 25 years since we played Bridgend Town in an FA Trophy 1st Round Replay in January 1981. Newport needed the points, being in a relegation struggle while we were safe in mid-table with Wembley on our minds, so in the circumstances it was an entertaining game.

The match started well with Paul Hakim giving us the lead after only 5 minutes with a header that the keeper got a hand to but could not keep out. The lead did not last long and a great long range shot by Cortez Belle and another from 25 yards by Jason Bowen saw the Welshmen in the lead by the 17th minute. On 20 minutes we might have had an equaliser from another Hakim header but Vaughan scooped the ball out from the line, or from just over the line, depending on your point of view. Just after the half hour Chris Taylor provided the ball for Belle to score again and make it 3-1. Blues fought back after the set backs and with half time looming Dean Cracknell made the most of a mix up in their defence to pull the score back to 3-2.

Newport came out for the second half all guns blazing and both Andrew Thomas and Nick Harrhy had chances before Belle was the provider for Taylor to score their 4th with a header. Yet again Stortford came back and Martin Hayes scored to cut the deficit back to one goal again. Almost immediately Taylor scored again with a great solo goal and in the 86th minute Newport rounded off the scoring as Jason Bowen provided a great pass for Corbisiero to meet and shoot on the run. A 6-3 scoreline flattered Newport but there was no doubt that Stortford had Wembley on their minds.
