Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 25th

In 2016 we had a rare Good Friday game away to Dartford. In the days before floodlights when we could only play on Saturdays most of the year it was common to play Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. The novelty was lost on the Stortford players however as we lost by 3-1.

A year later it wasn’t any better as we went down 2-0 at home against high-flying Maidenhead United.

Back in 2006 we hosted vistors from Wales in the form of Newport County We were just below mid-table at the time while Newport were in serious danger of relegation being placed 21st on match day.

On the face of it we should have been favourites but Newport had more to play for and we were without the injured Jack Midson and the suspended Dave Rainford which evened things up a little. It wasn’t a great game for the neutral with just 4 shots on target from both teams. It took only 6 minutes for County to register their first as Craig Hughes headed straight at James Hussey. Soon after Tom Ward put a cross in from which Roy Essandoh headed wide. Just before halfway in the first half Hughes was given another chance as a throw in by Paul Cochlin was headed across the 6 yard box by Jason Bowen. Hughes found space and headed his 10th goal of the season to give the visitors the lead. On the half hour Steve Morison almost made a goal out of nothing when his shot from the edge of the area was turned round the post by Tony Pennock. Duane Jackman almost equalised for Blues only for his header to come off the top of the bar while Blues were frustrated by the County offside trap for the remainder of the first half.

Blues didn’t exactly come out all guns blazing in the second half and on the hour Danny Morgan came on for his debut. He almost immediately beat the offside trap and just failed to connect with a Morison cross. Danny Mitchell then had a shot blocked while Matt Jones, although first to the rebound could only shoot weakly at goal. A rare attack by County saw Bowen shoot wide from a long throw before an uneventful second half saw a toothless Blues last chance as a free kick was awarded on the edge of the area. Gareth Gwillim took the kick and was not far wide of the top left hand corner of the County goal but the game ended in a disappointing defeat for Stortford.

Apart from Danny Morgan the only other Blues player to make his debut on this date was Ben Robb in 1978 at Tooting & Mitcham in the Isthmian League. Ben only played a few games that season but came back for another spell in the early 80s.
