Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 11th

In 2014 we managed a late draw in a game we should have won against second from bottom Dorchester Town while in 2006 we faced Thurrock and were looking to extend a run of nine games without defeat.

Snow flurries greeted the teams and the 304 spectators in a tentative opening quarter hour. The only sniff of goalmouth action came when Thurrock’s Steve Harper provided a perfect cross for Kris Lee who, thanks to the close attendance of Rob Gilman, failed to connect from six yards.

Tom Champion, who enjoyed a good game in the centre of defence, came to Gareth Gwillim’s rescue halfway through the first period. Gwillim’s blind backpass was intercepted by Jimmy McFarlane who took the ball round Andrew Young and shot into a seemingly empty goal only for Champion to slide in and knock the ball out for a corner. This was to be McFarlane’s last contribution as he was replaced by tall, young defender Ronnie Fletcher.

It was Fletcher who opened the scoring on 27 minutes, his first goal of the season. Sam Sloma’s corner was met by Fletcher’s head and, despite Matt Jones’ best efforts, ended up in the net.

Stortford were stunned into action and the remaining fifteen minutes of the first half saw the home side’s best passage of play in the match.

On 31 minutes the score was levelled. Another corner, Stortford’s second of the game, provided the equaliser. Alex Martin’s cross was headed on by Dave Rainford and met with a well-struck volley from close range by Morison on the far right hand post.

Eight minutes later, Martin fed Rainford with a wicked ball played into the box. Rainford’s first touch pushed the ball wide and beyond the oncoming keeper and the Blues’ captain seemed to make up his mind he was going to go down for a penalty. If the Oscars hadn’t been concluded earlier in the week, Dave may well have found himself with a nomination. He got a booking instead.

Blues were ahead after 43 minutes. Surrounded by three Thurrock defenders with his back to goal and just inside the penalty box, Steve Morison had nowhere to go. The striker showed his class by turning quickly towards the goal and with the minimum of uplift struck the ball with his left foot past the incredulous Glen Knight who could just stand and gape.

With a minute to go Roy Essandoh’s final contribution to the game was to put in a low cross that looked destined for Alex Martin to tuck away, only for Thurrock’s Fletcher to meet and dispatch for a corner that would signal the end of the first half.

There is a rumour that Stortford’s half times are spent sipping tea sprinkled with Mogodon. The rumour gained further credence as the players failed to pick up the momentum gained at the end of the first half and were overran by an eager Thurrock side. Or maybe Essandoh’s enforced substitution played a part as Duance Jackman replaced the number nine for the beginning of the second period.

Stortford had two efforts in the final 45. Rob Gilman came closest following Martin’s corner on 53 minutes but failed to connect. At the other end, Thurrock’s Kris Lee header hit the crossbar as the away side pressed for an equaliser.

They had to wait only ten more minutes but there was an element of luck about the goal. Sloma’s pass inside the penalty box was heading nowhere until it deflected off Tom Champion into the path of Steve Harper who had the simplest of chances and tapped in from close range.

A flurry of substitutions broke up play, but Thurrock continued as the dominant force. Their superiority was almost rewarded on 82 minutes when Andy Young saved superbly, low and to his right, Richard Pacquette’s close range header.
