Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 4th

The most significant match on this day happened in 1972. At Clarence Park, St Albans we played the third round, third replay of the FA Amateur Cup against Hitchin Town. As far as I can tell this is the only time Stortford has been involved in a cup tie which has gone to four matches and of course it is never likely to happen again. This was the last 16 stage and with both teams in mid table in the Isthmian League it looked like an even tie. The sides had first met on February 19th at Rhodes Avenue and played out a 1-1 draw. The following Saturday the replay at Hitchin was drawn again when we shared 4 goals. Nowadays that would be the point where we would have penalties but that was not an option in 1972. Due to a strike by power workers the second replay had to take place in the afternoon on Wednesday 1st March at Hertford Town. In front of what was probably a small crowd the teams reached stalemate again with another 1-1 draw. So we had to go over to St Albans on Saturday 4th March for a 3rd replay. This was a Stortford team in transition between the 1970 Athenian League Championship team and the 1974 FA Amateur Cup winning team including such favourites as Terry Moore, Dave Lawrence and Martin Smith. On this particular day the team was below par and a Paul Giggle goal finally put Hitchin through to the Quarter-Finals after more than seven hours of football. Blues of course went on to the Semi-Final the following year and then to win the cup in 1974.

By coincidence we also played at Clarence Park in 2017 when we met St Albans City in a Conference South game. This was out first win of the season against a top half side and gave us hope of avoiding relegation as we moved closer to 20th placed Gosport Borough.

The first-half was goalless but shortly after the break Blues scored the decisive goal. Walsh broke through the home defence and fed the ball to Ford who superbly rifled home an angled shot from eight yards for his first goal for the Blues. We could have doubled the lead in the 73rd minute when a fine long Correy Davidson ball found Ford and he played it through to Greene but Saints just scrambled it clear. A good all round performance saw Blues comfortably hold on to their lead to take three very valuable points.
