Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on April 5th

First mention on this day has to go all the way back to 1931 when Stortford scored one of their biggest ever league victories. At home to Welwyn Garden City in the Spartan League Division Twi East the Hertfordshire neighbours were annihilated 11-1 with Jimmy Badcock – third on the all time goal scoring list – getting an incredible seven!

More recently on this date we had an away league game v Hampton & Richmond Borough. Both teams were too close for comfort to the relegation zone but it was Blues who pulled away with a great win. After only 8 minutes we went ahead with a slightly fortunate goal as Michael Bakare seemed to miscue a cross which flew over Lovett in the Hampton goal. The Beavers fought back with a great run by Francis Quarm being let down by his finish. The home side had most of the play but were let down by their finishing. Just before half time Bakare got a second as a free kick from 30 yards out by the touchline somehow evaded everyone including the keeper to make it 2-0 at half time.

The second half saw a similar pattern as Hampton pressed for a goal but without much likelihood of scoring while Blues were happy to absorb the pressure and look dangerous on the break. One such break put Hampton out of their misery and killed the game off when Stefan Gaisie scored towards the end of the game, 3-0 to Stortford and a very useful 3 points.

Strangely our only other recent win on this date was back in 1999 against Boreham Wood. A good win was achieved on Easter Monday in depressing circumstances. Blues had been homeless for nearly 18 months and the game was played at Hitchin Town’s Top Field ground. There were only 174 there to see Stortford, bottom of the table and fighting relegation. The return of Tony Comerford and Troy Braham after injury gave Blues new fight and determination. The first goal was scored after 12 minutes when Martin Hayes headed the ball across the face of the goal for Michael Williams to score. Blues belied there lowly position and dominated the game but had to wait until midway through the second half to score again. Troy Braham’s cross in the 69th minute was met by a Tony Comerford header which gave the goalkeeper no chance. Gavin King in the Blues goal had barely a shot to save all afternoon and Stortford were given fresh hope in their relegation struggle. Ultimately they did go down that season but only a little over 3 months after this game they were playing the first game at Woodside Park and there was new hope of a fresh start.
