Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on February 11

Back in 2006 on this day we travelled to Basingstoke for an important league game. Both teams were in danger of being dragged into the relegation battle, Stortford lying in 17th place were three points behind Basingstoke who were two places higher up the table.

Tom Champion came back after injury to partner Rob Gillman for his first game in two months. Very early in the game David Ray almost gifted Blues the lead when he beat his own keeper while being hassled by Roy Essandoh but to his relief the ball hit the post and bounced away safely. Midway through the first half we did take the lead when Mark Paterson made a mistake and Steve Morison took full advantage, instantly shooting past Searle. Only two minutes later Basingstoke struck back however when Ray crossed for Lewis Cook to beat Andrew Young for the equaliser. This was how it remained at half time.

The football was less flowing in the second half with Stortford generally on top but chances were few and far between. Morison created a chance in the 63rd minute but despite beating Searle the shot ended up just the wrong side of the post. Jason Mason came on as a substitute and 10 minutes later Morison was the provider but the sub’s shot was saved by the Basingstoke keeper. After that both teams put in plenty of effort but a draw seemed inevitable. As the away team Blues should have been reasonably happy with a draw but Martin Hayes felt that with the performance we should have been able to take all three points. In the end the result was probably one neither side wanted.

The last home game on this date is probably best forgotten as it was a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Yeading in the Isthmian League Cup. To make it worse, at the time Yeading were a division below us in the Isthmian League. Presumably Blues had their focus more on avoiding relegation and joining Yeading in Isthmian Division One.

Our most recent game on the date came in 2017 as we went down 2-0 at Hungerford Town..
