Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on February 7

There was a rare event in 1931 when our home Spartan League game with Waltham Comrades was abandoned on 83 minutes due to fog – we were losing 1-0 at the time. According to the Herts & Essex Observer report at the time the fog developed during the second half and the game was abandoned only two minutes after the only goal. The game was replayed on Easter Monday when we lost 3-2.

More recently back in 2004 we faced old rivals Kingstonian on this ground in an Isthmian League Premier Division match. Blues had won 4 of their previous 5 games and were looking to continue the good form.

They couldn’t have asked for a better start as a lob from Carl Drew hit the visitor’s post before James Bunn scored from the rebound. Kingstonian responded well to the setback although they wasted an early freekick. In the 16th minute they scored an equaliser when following a free kick mark Pattison scored from a shot that Micky Desborough should probably have saved. Minutes later and Blues had a free kick from which they nearly took the lead again. Alex Martin took the kick and Grant Cooper’s header was somehow cleared. Two minutes later and a cross from Martin found Glen Southam who was inches away from regaining the lead.

At the other end Mark Pattison put a pass through to Grant Payne whose shot from eight yards was saved by Desborough’s feet. Just before the half hour mark Blues regained the lead. A great move saw Rainford, Bunn and Southam swap passes before Southam took his chance to score. However 7 minutes before half-time Kingstonian should have been level. Cooper fouled Bashiru Alimi and the referee awarded a penalty. K’s captain Scott Steele took the penalty but hit the post with Desborough beaten and Blues went in at half-time 2-1 up.

The second half was a bit of an anti-climax with K’s not threatening again. In fact chances from Rainford, Southam and Cooper from a free kick should all have increased Stortford’s lead but in the end 2-1 was sufficient to take the points and move them up to 9th place in the table with a top 13 place necessary to guarantee a place in the new Conference South.

Finally in 2017 we played an entertaining Herts Senior Cup semi-final, winning 7-3 at Ware with no fewer than six Stortford players on the score sheet.
