Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 7th

This date has been successful in recent years with a 3-0 win over Margate in 2017 to give hope for a resurgence in form. Previously in 2012 Guiseley were our visitors for a Conference North game. Guiseley were third in the table chasing promotion while we were 19th. Although our form had improved markedly in the time since Rod Stringer had taken over we still expected a hard game and would probably have been content with a draw. The game was the debut for a certain Ricky Sappleton who came straight into the team in place of Danny Subuola. It was Guiseley’s new signing, James Walshaw from Darlington who had the first chance though. Shortly afterwards Stortford got into gear as Dwight Gayle and Sappleton linked up for the first time, leading to a Reece Prestedge header being blocked on the line. Promise turned to reality in the 10th minute as Prestedge received the ball from Gayle before rounding the keeper and scoring the opening goal.

Before 20 minutes were up Blues doubled their lead. Sappleton laid the ball off for Ritchie Jones, whose low ball to the near post was converted by Arron Wickham from close range for his first goal – 2-0. This may have been unexpected but it was not undeserved and Stortford comfortably maintained their lead for the rest of the first half, only having concern right at the death when a mistake by Sean Francis almost let Senior in for a chance, but the defence recovered quickly.

The Yorkshiremen came back at Stortford strongly in the second half as they saw their promotion chances being damaged. Jordan Archer did well to gather a free kick under pressure in the 50th minute, while 5 minutes later Baldry headed across the goal from close range. In the 72nd minute Guiseley got a deserved goal as a number of deflections led the ball to sub Ellington who kept his head on the edge of the area and put a low shot under Archer to put the visitors back in the game.

Now it was expected that Blues would have a struggle to hold the lead against a much higher ranked team than themselves but with Guiseley pushing forward in search of an equaliser Blues were able to exploit a gap in the 84th minute. Gayle got the ball just inside the Guiseley half and playing a pacey one-two with Shulton he hit a low shot into the corner to restore the 2 goal advantage. Rothery was then sent off for an elbow into Ali Abdullahi’s face as the visitors hopes of getting something from the game evaporated. Finally in the 4th minute of added on time Stortford secured the points when in another break Prestedge found Dadson who scored the final goal of the game.

This was our first win on this date since 1989 when a Stortford side ridiing high in the Isthmian League won 2-0 away to Slough Town with goals from English and McCayna. The last home game on this date was all the way back in 1984 at home to Wokingham Town.

The above game was also notable as the debut for Ricky Sappleton, one of the more popular players of recent years, who went on to score 25 goals in 60 games for us.
