Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 9th

For some reason there have been fewer games on this date than some others, maybe the weather intervenes more often at this time of year. The last game on this date in 2001 certainly made up for the deficit of games with plenty of goals. At the time Stortford’s promotion push from Isthmian Division 1 was faltering due to a leaky defence with 15 goals conceded in the last 3 games and the team languishing below half way in the table.

For the game at Whyteleafe Martin Hayes brought in 3 new signings designed to bolster the defence – keeper Micky Desborough and defenders Ray Taylor and Mark Risley – all from Grays Athletic. Obviously it takes time for new signings to settle in and there was no immediate defensive improvement in this game. Whyteleafe had the lead on 11 minutes when Dean Lock capitalised on an error by Justin Bowen. Blues hit back immediately as Trevor Paul’s shot was blocked and Glen Southam scored. Mid-way through the first half Whyteleafe had a penalty and Lock scored again. It was soon 3-1 as Paul McKay’s cross was headed in by Daniel Nwanze. However Blues showed spirit and that there was nothing wrong with their attack as they scored three times in quick succession before half time, two of the goals coming from Martin Hayes while in between Ryan Gunn scored with a great 20 yard volley.

It was business as usual in the second half though as Bowen’s poor back header was seized by Lock who game Nwanze a simple scoring opportunity – 4-4. In the 65th minute Whyteleafe had the winner and Lock had his hat trick. Taylor fouled Lock in the box and the striker took the penalty himself to win the game. A frustrating afternoon for Blues as they also picked up 4 yellow cards.

Today is the first game in Bishop’s Stortford on this date since 1988. There was a home game in 1999 but this was played in St Albans due to Woodside Park not yet being ready and resulted in an unmemorable 3-0 defeat to Harrow Borough.

So back to January 1988 and the going at Rhodes Avenue was wet and heavy – no surprise there. The opposition, again, was Harrow Borough. Both teams were in mid-table, Blues last game had been a 3-0 loss to Hayes at home on Boxing Day so they were hoping to bounce back. After a goal less first half Francis Cassidy and Carl Zacchau scored in the 60th and 61st minutes which pretty much killed the game off Colin Tate scored a consolation goal for Harrow in the 80th minute but Blues claimed the points for our most recent win on this date.
