Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 14th

One of the more recent games on this date may have only been a Herts Charity Cup match but it was also Stortford’s biggest away win in their history. It should be remembered that at the time of the game Blues were in the relegation zone of the Isthmian Premier Division while Tring, although two divisions lower, were in mid table so this must have looked like a potential giant killing before the game.

This was not even a full first team as Freddie Hyatt and Glen Southam were rested, although the first choice strike duo of Trevor Paul and Vinnie John were deadly as they revived memories of their form in the promotion winning season of 2001-02. Thoughts of giant killing were soon dismissed as Stortford took a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes. Both came from Martin Hayes corners with Wolf and then Paul applying the necessary touch. Vinnie John clipped the top of the cross bar but the next goal did not come until just after the half hour mark when John was fouled in the penalty area and scored from the spot himself. Any thoughts that Stortford might ease off with a three goal lead and half time approached were dispelled as Paul scored from a Braham cross three minutes later and then received a through ball from Williamson, beating a defender and the keeper. Just before the second strike Chakaodza had taken advantage of casual play in the Stortford defence to score and make it 5-1 at half time.

There was no let up in the second half as just on the hour John beat three defenders and then gave the ball to Hayes to score the 6th. Almost immediately Wiltshire found John with a ball through a maze of defenders and a lob over Whittamore in the Tring goal made it 7-1. The rout was completed with a goal for Paul on 72 minutes and another for John on 84 minutes as both players scored hat tricks.
