Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 22nd

The last two games on this date have seen a sound defeat at Chelmsford and a narrow win at home to Lewes, neither very inspiring games. Going back to 1994 however when we were chasing promotion back to the Isthmian League Premier Division we find a resounding win over Windsor & Eton.

We were leading the league while Windsor were in 20th place so we were favourites for a comfortable win but as Blues fans know it does not always happen that way. The Royalists , actually forced a corner in the first 60 seconds, however Blues defence were not caught napping and shortly after Stewart Ingielewicz crossed to Lee Burns whose shot was cleared off the line with the keeper beaten.

The first 15 minutes were scrappy though before Stortford began to take a grip on the game. Tony Comerford’s pass on 22 minutes found Leo Fortune-West whose shot was blocked and two minutes later Comerford found Andy Edmonds who shot wide from a good position. Fortune-West had a shot well save soon afterwards as Blues were now dominating play. Comerford had a shot blocked on the half hour but in the 39th minute Stortford finally scored the important first goal.

Ingielewicz passed two defenders and hit a right foot shot into the far corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. On the stroke of half time Blues scored a well deserved second when Edmonds found Lee Burns with a cross from the right. Burns struck a first time volley at the far post to send Blues in for the break 2-0 up.

No complacency as Stortford scored their third within a minute of the restart to claim the points. Kevin Jordan was tripped in the area and Edmonds scored from the resulting penalty. Four minutes later another ‘goal’ by Burns was disallowed and in the 54th minute Blues could have had another penalty when Hopkins appeared to be pushed in the back. Just after the hour mark Ingielwicz made it 4-0 when he won a 50-50 ball with the Windsor keeper, although he was substituted immediately due to an injury. From this point on it was a stroll for Blues as Nicky White headed the fifth goal in the 79th minute from a Dave Macciochi cross. There could have been more goals from White and Fortune-West but it was a comfortable win for Stortford nevertheless.
