Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 20th
We haven’t played on this date since 2007 when we faced Cambridge City in an M11 derby match. At the time we were second in the table and chasing promotion while Cambridge were in mid-table meaning we started the game as favourites and very much needed the points
The talking point from the first half centered around not one but two debatable penalties awarded by the referee. Up until then it had been a probing but quiet game. Dave Collis had fired one of his trademark free kicks just over the City crossbar. On 10 minutes Paul Goodacre was caught napping and Craig O’Connor should have done much better than blast his shot wide of the goal when clear.
Then the first of the penalties was awarded to the Blues. The referee had spotted a foul that not many in the ground had seen but Jack Midson was foiled in his attempt to score when the spot-kick was well-saved low to Danny Naisbett’s left. On 21 minutes it was City’s turn. The feeling was that there may have been a handball, perhaps committed by Gareth Gwillim. The referee probably knew. Ben Bowditch didn’t worry as he scored smacking the ball low to Chris Wright’s left. His over exuberant celebrations were rewarded with the game’s only yellow card.
Blues attempted to redress the balance immediately. Richard Howell came close but headed into the side netting when Collis’ corner found him unmarked. And Blues’ fans were left to wonder if this wasn’t to be their day when Paul Goodacre was denied by the crossbar, heading Midson’s cross. With the first half ending at 1-0 to the visitors it was still all to play for.
The difference between the teams lay in Blues’ persistence in playing the ball on the ground. It took 63 minutes though for the team to reap their reward. A cracking move involving Howell and Porter resulted in a corner that Collis stepped up to take. His sweet right footed cross was met by Rob Gilman who fired into the roof of the net from close range to level the scores. Woodside erupted in joy that was to double in volume just a minute later. Collis was again the provider for Jack Midson, ghosting ahead of his markers, to flick in at the near post.
On 67 minutes the result was almost put beyond doubt. Midson crossed to Porter but Naisbett was equal to his close range shot. Yet again Collis was involved when his cross was met by Paul Goodacre’s head only to see his effort cleared off the City line.
A flurry of substitutions seemed to break up the flow of the game and that seemed to work in the opposition’s favour as they put Blues under pressure for the final quarter of an hour. Up until stoppage time they only had a long range Charlie Henry shot to show for their pressure. But in the 4th minute of time added on, Blues somehow managed to hold on to the lead as Lee Chaffey, Henry again and O’Connor all saw shots saved by Chris Wright or cleared by a defender. It was a frantic end to a very good game and a game that Blues thoroughly deserved to win.
