Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 19th

There have been plenty of goals on this date. In 1993 we faced Billericay Town in an Isthmian Full Members Cup game. Stortford had won this cup two years earlier when it was known as the Loctite Cup.

Only two places separated the two teams in the league with both aiming for promotion to the Premier Division so you might have expected a close game especially as Billericay would be after revenge having lost 4-1 to Stortford a month earlier in a league game. However Blues ran riot, Gary Dance and Andy Edmonds had shots saved before the first goal in the 13th minute. Andy Walker beat 3 defenders before crossing to Stewart Ingielewicz who headed home. Within 2 minutes it was 2-0 as Dance seized a loose ball and passed to Marc Das who scored from 12 yards. Billericay fought back after that and Williams forced Billy Harrigan to clear the ball but apart from that the Essex side’s fiinishing let them down. They were to regret it as on 30 minutes Blues seized on a poor goal kick and the ball was quickly returned for Andy Walker to score.

In the second half Dance hit the cross bar before Andy Edmonds increased Blues lead from the penalty spot. Lee Burns had several chances before he finally score the last goal in the 68th minute. Even then there was time for Nicky White to hit the bar so that noone could say the scoreline was flattering to Blues.

While there might have been some doubt as to how seriously Billericay took a minor cup game two years earlier we had played Hayes in a league game and also scored a few goals. At the time Stortford were in 17th place but had between two and five games in hand on the teams around them while Hayes were exactly in mid-table. There was plenty of action early on as Manderson and Bedford before a let off for Blues on 20 minutes when Gary Keen shot wide from 7 yards. A couple of minutes later Leo Fortune-West forced a save from the Hayes keeper but it was the visitors who took the lead in stoppage time at the end of the first half as Steve Pope seized a rebound.

There was more end to end stuff in the second half and in the 52nd minute Bedford’s cross found Manderson at the near post for the equaliser. The first minute after scoring is always dangerous as teams relax and in this case it was fatal as Reg Leather took advantage of poor defensive play to restore Hayes lead. This time the lead lasted only 7 minutes as Fortune-West scored from Peter Risley’s cross to make it 2-2. On 76 minutes minutes Blues went in front for the first time as Joseph found Manderson in space to score in the left hand corner. Five minutes later Fortune-West scored his second and Blues fourth as he shot through a crowd of players.

In 1988 we also scored 4 goals against Stevenage Borough in a Herts Senior Cup tie. Goals from Jeff Wood (2), Peter Barker and Carl Zacchau sent us through to a Semi-Final against Watford.
