Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 18th

The last five games on this date have all been at home but without much success, you have to go back to 1986 for the last win on this date when we faced Northwich Victoria in the FA Trophy.

We were playing in the second round, the first stage with a national draw and we had drawn a side mid-table in what is now called the National League while we were mid-table in the Isthmian League Premier Division, so at the time one division lower. Northwich had travelled down from Cheshire and were strong opponents having been winners, runners up and semi-finalists in the previous four years, although we had won the competition only 5 years earlier so had no reason to fear anyone at Rhodes Avenue.

In front of a 700 crowd Stortford began nervously conceding two corners in the first few minutes. Having weathered that storm, after 18 minutes a cross from Ray Redshaw found Wayne Aspinall but his shot was parried by Martin Taylor and as Blues defence scrambled to gain control the ball went behind for a goal kick. Blues responded two minutes later with a 20 yard shot from Les Whitton which was only a yard wide of the Northwich post. Almost immediately Mark Dunn found Glyn Stephens who turned and shot forcing a reflex save from Taylor who may have been unsighted by the players in front of him.

From this point on Blues began to take control and on the half hour Phil Hopkins put Kevin Newbury but the shot was wide. A minute later Duncan Hardy found Micky Nunn whose firce shot forced Ryan in the Northwich goal to touch the ball on to the cross earner. By now a goal was in the offing and in the 38th minute Hopins lobbed the Northwich defence and Newbury held off Dave Young to shoot past Ryan.

The second half started with the visitors coming out aggressively to get back into the game. Very soon Paul Bennett’ cross found Dunn whose shot hit Taylor’s post. Blues showed they were not complacent and soon after Whitton shot just wide of the post from 18 yards. Then in the 59th minute Blues scored their second goal. Les Whitton started the move by winning the ball from Stephens on the half way line and then finding Hardy on the left. Hardy put in a great curling cross which found Newbury who decisively headed his second goal.

It was far from over at that point but Northwich lost their composure and while pressuring Blues lost their heads in the danger zone. Redshaw showed some brilliance up front but when he had shooting chances twice shot weakly at Taylor. Blues were able to hold out fairly comfortably in the end and faced Cheltenham Town in the last 16, eventually losing in a replay delayed for almost a month by bad weather.
