Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ game on January 31st
The most recent league match on this date was away to Worcester City in 2009 in Conference South. Worcester, along with Histon, were the only team we played in both Conference North & South. This was out first ever visit to St Georges Lane, Worcester, although the Midlands side had visited Rhodes Avenue a couple of times for cup games, including our 1981 FA Trophy fourth round game.
January 2009 saw Blues in a uncomfortable 18th position in Conference South while Worcester were in a safe mid-table position. Blues started the game strongly though with Sam Higgins forcing a save from Danny McDonnell early on. It was no surprise – at least to the visiting supporters – when we took the lead after 15 minutes. A mistake in the home defence gave Danny Harris an opening and when his shot was blocked Lewis Smith grabbed his chance and scored from just outside the area.
Only a minute later Nicky Eyre had to be alert to make a save from Craig Wilder but on the whole Blues looked more dangerous with Harris and Smith both having chances. Just after the half hour mark a well deserved second goal came for Blues. Harris had the ball on the left and found Smith who scored with a great shot from 25 yards. Soon after this Jamie Price was sent off for a foul on Smith and the game seemed to be Blues for the taking, especially as Grant Cooper twice came close to making it 3-0 before half time.
To their credit Worcester rallied in the second half despite coming out a man and two goals down. First Marco Adaggio headed just over and then Eyre had to make a good save to deny Wilder. Blues still looked dangerous on the break but when Worcester reduced the deficit midway through the second half as Adaggio brilliantly lobbed the ball over Eyre from 30 yards.
This prompted Blues to have their own rally and with 15 minutes later Danny Green took a corner. The ball was met cleanly by Harlee Dean who headed the third goal for the visitors to break Worcester’s resistance. Roy Essandoh came on as sub and had two chances for a 4th goal while Harris also shot over from close range.
Another memorable game on this date was in 1981 when we drew 1-1 away to the FA Trophy holders Dagenham on their Victoria Road ground. We of course won the replay and went on to succeed the Daggers as FA Trophy holders.
