ANDREW CORNELL LOOKS BACK AT BLUES’ GAMES ON MARCH 14

One of the more recent games on this date was in 2009 when we comfortably beat Worcester City on this ground, but there was a much more significant match against the same opponents in 1981 in an FA Trophy quarter-final. Blues had come all the way from the preliminary round six months earlier and now while still in Isthmian Division One they faced top Conference side Worcester City. A crowd of 2500 were at Rhodes Avenue for the game with a side who included Jimmy Cumbes in goal, a player who had a Football League Cup winner’s medal from his time with Aston Villa.

Blues were not short of confidence though, playing their 10th match in the FA Trophy and also chasing promotion to the Premier Division while also still in the Isthmian League Cup and London Senior Cup as well. Stortford controlled the game from the start, although the bandaged knee of Miek Mitchell showed one weakness. Mitchell still contributed to the game but the star was undoubtedly John Radford. Radford showed his experience of the big occasion to run the Worcester defence ragged while inspiring the rest of the team.

Despite the dominance it was the 26th minute before Stortford scored their first goal. Radford got on the end of a pass in the penalty area, rounded the keeper and from an acute angle hit the post. Alert as ever Terry Sullivan was first to the rebound and it was 1-0. Worcester stirred themselves and held the upper hand for the rest of the first half and well into the second half, but Ian Smith controlled the midfield and there was never a clear cut chance from the Midlands side. It was Smith who made the second goal on 62 minutes with a great pass which found Joe Simmonds on the edge of the penalty area. Simmonds had the time and space to shoot and did so decisively to make it 2-0. Only 5 minutes later Roger Avery scored the third and from then on Stortford were in complete control and it was damage limitation for Worcester.

Radford was in his element and first put John Clarke in for a shot which was tipped past the post by Cumbes and then crossed for Smith to head into the net – although the “goal” was disallowed. Finally with three minutes to go Radford chipped the final goal from the edge of the area. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen from a Stortford team, they didn’t just beat a team from two divisions higher, they dominated them and won with style.
