Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 23rd

Until 2016 when we beat Gosport Borough 2-0 at home this date had not been an overly successful one for Blues with only one Herts Senior Cup win in the last 30+ years. A recent attempt to end this run was in 2010, a 2-2 draw away to Bath City in Conference South.

A double from Charlie Sheringham saw Bishop’s Stortford grab a point at Twerton Park in a match that looked well beyond reach. Stortford barely managed an attack on goal during the first hour, but the introduction of substitute Max Lettejallow combined with Sheringham’s clinical finishing spearheaded a comeback. The home side began the game strongly, with Adam Connolly scooping an early chance wide after some good work on the left from Kaid Mohamed. Almost immediately, Ben Nunn’s cross was headed on by Bertie Brayley to Charlie Sheringham, whose

header cannoned off the upright.

Bath were in the driving seat for the first period, with Darren Edwards heading wide before Nicky Eyre pulled off a superb save to send Kaid Mohamed’s attempted lob over the bar. The introduction of Stuart Douglas for the injured Edwards posed even more problems and it was Douglas who set upAdam Connolly, who struck a perfect left-foot drive from outside the penalty area to give Bath the lead. Stortford were lucky to escape two minutes later when Lewis Hogg beat both Alex Bentley and Matt Jones to surge into the box and cross to Douglas, who was unable to control the ball to finish the move.

The Romans doubled their lead straight after the break, when a good Stortford move broke down on the right and Adam Connolly set Kaid Mohamed free on the left wing. Mohamed cued a perfect cross for Lewis Hogg to head into the net at the far post. Mark Simpson introduced Max Lettejallow in place of Scott Shulton, and this seemed to buoy the Stortford midfield as the visitors halved the lead with their first real attack of the game. Lettejallow picked up the ball on the right wing and

crossed for Charlie Sheringham who turned sharply and made space to slot the ball through a crowded six yard box past Ryan Robinson.

Stortford began to take a hold of the game as Ben Nunn’s long range shot whistled past the post before Charlie Sheringham headed just wide from a Glen Southam free kick. Nunn sent a second long-range shot across the Bath goal before Nicky Eyre tipped a deflected shot from Adam Connolly over the bar to keep Stortford in the game. Lettejallow was again involved in   Stortford’s second goal, making a powerful run through the midfield to play in Glen Southam on the byline. The Stortford midfielder rifled across goal and Sheringham reacted quicker than Robinson to poke the ball home and draw Stortford level. The home side began to push for a winning goal, but Nicky Eyre was equal to Adam Connolly’s shot after a good run down the

left. The draw sees Stortford in 13th place in the table ahead of a further six matches against mid-table opposition.

Back in 1965 we played Maidenhead United in the FA Amateur Cup 2nd Round. In those days Maidenhead were two divisions above us in the Athenian League, so to beat them by 4-1 was quite an achievement. Unfortunately in the next round we faced Harwich & Parkeston who were challenging us for the championship of our division. We did the hard work, getting an away draw, but then lost the home replay.

Another good win on this date was in 1982 when we beat Hayes (the holders) in the London Senior Cup on their own ground. In those days the London Senior Cup was taken much more seriously – the last game Wimbledon played as a non-league club was a London Senior Cup Final – and Hayes had a good team. The FA Trophy was paraded alongside the London Senior Cup before the game and what a game it was. The scores were level after 90 minutes at 1-1 before David Brame gave Blues the lead 5 minutes into extra time. In the 103rd minute the holders equalised with Howell’s 2nd goal of the game, but 9 minutes from the end Dave Worrell scored his 2nd to win it for Stortford.
